Let’s Fly Away

A large plane flying into the sunset.

My response to today’s prompt hit me right away. The best and worst airport I have been to is actually the same airport! The airport in question is LaGuardia in NYC. Allow me to explain.

When I first started flying, there were a few airports I encountered that I tried very hard to avoid after the first experience. LGA was one of them. It was a pit of despair. Old, run down, and generally not a great place to be. If a connection was going to bring me through there, I either selected a different flight or at least tried to keep the layover time to a minimum.

Then, on one particular work trip, I had to go through there. I was not aware of the extent to which they were remodeling, and was I in for a surprise. Most of the airport was completed by this point, and it was a night and day difference. Honestly, it was downright palatial. I almost couldn’t believe I was in the same place. Of course, I did say that “most” of the airport was complete. I was brought back to reality when I got to my gate. It just so happened that the last place left to be overhauled was this concourse. Oh well. I’m sure it is done by now.

I haven’t had the opportunity to get back since. but I would certainly not shy away from a layover there now. The glow up was amazing!

Can’t tell you the last time I flew into LGA. Denver (DIA) used to be my favorite, to the point I didn’t mind arriving early for a flight, but when they started a remodel it got to be less than pleasant. It’s possible the vast majority of the project is done now. And I’m sure there’s a least favorite, but it’s not hitting me right now.

I can assure you that it is NOT done. DIA was still a mess when we went back there in May.
