So, here is the last book I started but never finished. Perhaps a bit of a surprise to some of you reading this that I would be at all interested in this subject. And well, the fact that I never finished it probably answers that.
But how did I even come to it in the first place? That is a good question. And one I can actually answer. A number of years ago, I was a big fan and viewer of the Discovery Channel show Dirty Jobs. The host, Mike Rowe was funny, engaging, and really downplayed his role in each episode. I really enjoyed watching. and when he started a podcast, I listened to that as well.
At some point or another, he suggested a couple of books he enjoyed that he thought everyone should read. I honestly can’t remember the first one. but I read it. This was the second one. I started it with the full intention of finishing it. But a couple of things transpired that caused me to suspend reading.
One was that it is exceptionally boring and dry. He was using the writing style of the time, which wasn’t so bad. But the topic wasn’t the most exciting thing going. I was nodding off after a few paragraphs. The second thing was my view of the aforementioned Mr. Rowe.
I still thought he was funny and entertaining. But his podcast, which started as a quick story about interesting and usually unknown fact about a person or celebrity, became much longer and drifted away from the quick, engaging format he started with. Also, while he mostly kept politics out of it, they quietly crept in here and there. I eventually stopped listening altogether.
Will I ever pick it back up and finish it? Probably not. But if my fear of confrontation, and my Olympic levels of procrastination ever subside, I’ll write to Mike to share my thoughts on various things.
